Insulating paper is a critical material utilized in electrical equipment; its primary function is to isolate live components from grounded parts, thereby preventing current leakage and short circuits. Its operating principle is predicated upon the material's inherent high electrical resistance. Composed of fibrous materials, insulating paper features a dense internal structure wherein the fibers are tightly interwoven, rendering it virtually non-conductive. Consequently, when a voltage is applied, current is unable to traverse the paper, thereby fulfilling its role as an electrical barrier.

 

In practical applications, insulating paper does not rely solely on its intrinsic material properties to impede current flow; it also leverages air gaps or laminated structures-formed by layering sheets of paper-to enhance its insulating efficacy. When high voltage is applied to the insulating paper, the resulting electric field is distributed across both the paper layers and the intervening air gaps; this distribution serves to disperse and block the current, thereby preventing localized dielectric breakdown. Furthermore, the thickness and number of layers of the insulating paper can be customized to suit specific voltage ratings, ensuring that the assembly possesses sufficient dielectric strength.

 

Insulating paper is also characterized by its high thermal stability, moisture resistance, and superior mechanical strength, attributes that enable it to perform reliably over extended periods in applications such as electric motors, transformers, and switchgear. Even when subjected to environments characterized by high temperatures or fluctuating humidity levels, the paper fibers-often utilized in conjunction with resins or oil-impregnated media-retain their insulating properties, thereby guaranteeing the safe and secure operation of the electrical equipment.
