Prepreg is a semi-finished composite material that is sensitive to storage conditions; proper storage is essential to ensure its performance and processing efficacy.
First and foremost, temperature control is critical. Most prepregs require low-temperature storage to retard the resin's curing reaction. It is generally recommended to store them in a refrigerated environment-typically maintained at around -18°C-as this extends their shelf life and preserves their drapability.
Secondly, humidity management is vital. Prepreg is highly sensitive to moisture; exposure to dampness can easily lead to issues such as delamination, void formation, or resin bleed-out. Therefore, moisture-proof packaging should be utilized during storage, and the storage environment must be kept dry. Any material removed from its packaging but not immediately used should be promptly resealed to prevent prolonged exposure to the air.
Attention must also be paid to physical protection and labeling management. Prepreg is typically thin and susceptible to processing defects caused by dents, creases, or scratches; consequently, heavy pressure and contact with sharp objects must be avoided during storage. Additionally, each batch should be clearly labeled with the production date, batch number, resin type, and expiration date. This facilitates adherence to the "First-In, First-Out" (FIFO) principle during production, thereby ensuring the consistent quality of the processing materials.
